A new Theology for Women
'We need to create still broader opportunities for a more incisive female presence in the Church. … This presents a great challenge for pastors and theologians, who are in a position to recognize more fully what this entails with regard to the possible role of women in decision-making in different areas of the Church’s life.
Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium,' pp103-104
The Office for the Participation of Women (OPW) was established by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference in 2001 as a result of recommendations arising from the Woman and Man: One in Christ Jesus Report on the Participation of Women in the Catholic Church in Australia (1999).
The Office’s main role is to promote the participation of women in decision-making, leadership and ministry in the Catholic Church in Australia and to provide a focal point for ongoing dialogue and the integration of ideas pertaining to the women and their participation in the Catholic Church in Australia.
The Office for the Participation of Women (OPW) reports to the Bishops Commission for Church Ministry (BCCM). The current bishop delegate to the OPW is Bishop Peter Ingham of Wollongong.
The Council for Australian Catholic Women (CACW) advises the Bishops Commission for Church Ministry (BCCM) on matters relating to the participation of women in the Catholic Church in Australia.
The Office for the Participation of Women also works closely with the Australian Catholic Council for Lay Pastoral Ministry (ACCLPM). This council’s role is to advise the BCCM on matters relating to Lay Pastoral Ministry in Australia and to support Lay Pastoral Ministers in their service to the Church, to assist Lay Pastoral Ministers with accreditation and employment relations and to promote the role and value of Lay Pastoral Ministers.
